Mapping your salvage yard with a consumer drone
A current top-down picture of your own lot, shot in twenty minutes with cheap gear.
Why the map you're using is lying to you
Open the satellite view of your yard right now. Count the rows. Look at where the crush pile is. Check whether that back section is even in the right shape.
Chances are it's wrong, and the reason is simple: satellite and aerial imagery gets refreshed on someone else's schedule, not yours. Depending on where your yard sits, the picture your crew is looking at could be from last year or from several years ago. In a salvage yard, that's ancient history. Rows move. Sections get re-laid-out. Hundreds of units have come and gone.
The result is a map your crew half-trusts, which is worse than no map at all. They spot one thing that's clearly wrong and start ignoring the rest of it.
What a drone actually gets you
A current top-down photo of your own property. That's it, and it's enough.
The value isn't precision surveying. It's recognition. When a dismantler looks at a picture where the fence line, the shop roof, the row spacing, and the gravel patches all match what they're standing in, they navigate by instinct. They don't have to translate a diagram into reality. Pin a unit on a real photo and they know where it is before they've read the row number.
It also gives you something to think with. Layout problems that are invisible from the ground — a row that forces every trip to cross the whole property, a gate nobody can reach with a loader — are obvious from a hundred metres up.
The gear
An inexpensive consumer drone is enough. You are not doing photogrammetry for a mining company. You're taking a clear picture of a gravel lot from above.
In Canada, sub-250g drones sit in a lighter regulatory category than heavier aircraft, which is why most operators in your position start there. But do not take that as legal clearance from an article. Verify the current Transport Canada RPAS rules yourself before you fly — registration, pilot certificate requirements, and operating rules depend on the drone's weight and where you're flying, and they get updated. If you're in the US, check the current FAA rules instead, including whether your flight counts as recreational or commercial, since flying to support your business generally does not count as recreational.
Beyond the drone: two or three charged batteries, a memory card with room on it, and a phone or tablet that isn't about to die.
Planning the flight
Timing and technique matter more than equipment.
- Pick a calm day. Wind is the main thing that ruins a small drone flight. Cold also cuts battery life hard, so plan for fewer minutes in winter than the spec sheet promises.
- Get even light. Bright overcast is ideal — no harsh shadows hiding half the units. If it's clear, shoot near midday when the sun is high and shadows are short. Low sun creates long shadows that make a row of cars unreadable.
- Fly one consistent altitude. Pick a height and hold it for the whole flight. Changing altitude between shots makes the images impossible to line up later.
- Shoot straight down. Point the camera at nadir — 90 degrees, straight at the ground. Angled shots look nicer and are useless for mapping.
- Fly straight overlapping passes. Mow the lawn: parallel lines across the property with generous overlap between passes and between shots. Too much overlap costs you nothing but storage. Too little and nothing stitches.
- Include a margin. Capture past your fence line on all sides. You need the property boundary in frame, and you'll want the extra context when you're aligning the image.
Practical cautions
Real ones, not boilerplate:
- Airspace. Yards are often near industrial areas, and industrial areas are often near airports and heliports. Check the airspace over your property before you take off, every time.
- People below. Don't fly over your crew, customers, or the neighbours. Do it early, or on a closed day, when the yard is empty.
- Property lines. You're photographing your own yard. Keep the flight over your own ground and be considerate about what ends up in frame beyond it.
- Weather and battery. Land with reserve. A drone that dies over a row of cars is an expensive lesson and possibly a damaged roof.
- Line of sight. Keep the aircraft where you can see it. On a large property that may mean repositioning yourself mid-flight rather than flying to the far corner from where you parked.
Turning photos into a yard map
Two roads here, and the simple one is usually right.
The simple version: if your property fits in one frame at a legal altitude, take one good high shot and you're done. No stitching, no software, no fuss. Many yards fit.
The stitched version: if it doesn't fit, run your overlapping passes through stitching software to produce a single orthophoto. Plenty of options exist at a range of prices; for a one-lot job you don't need the expensive end.
Either way, the next step is alignment. Line the image up with landmarks that don't move — the main gate, the corners of the office or shop, fence corners, the scale. Those anchors are what make the image match your existing yard map and what let you place a unit on it accurately.
Keeping it current
The whole point was that the old picture was stale. Don't let yours become stale too.
Re-fly after any significant layout change — a new row, a section cleared, the crush area relocated. Otherwise, put it on a seasonal cadence and get it done. Once you've flown it a couple of times it's a twenty-minute job. Keep the old images; comparing this year to last year tells you more about how your yard has drifted than any inventory report will.
Using it day to day
The map earns its keep when units get pinned on it. A dismantler opening a pull list and seeing the unit dropped on a photo of the actual yard — the real rows, the real fence, the real gravel — finds it faster than any grid reference or row-and-space code will get them there. New hires get productive faster too, because they're not memorizing an abstraction.
Pre-flight checklist
- Confirmed the current Transport Canada (or FAA) rules that apply to my drone and my flight.
- Checked airspace over the property.
- Batteries charged, memory card cleared.
- Calm wind, even light, sun high or bright overcast.
- Yard clear of people; crew told what's happening.
- Altitude chosen and locked; camera pointed straight down.
- Flight path planned as parallel overlapping passes with margin past the fence.
- Landmarks identified for aligning the image afterward.
Fly it once and you'll spot at least one layout problem you've been walking past for years.
Getting the picture is the easy half; the value shows up when units are pinned on it and your crew is navigating by it.
